About Aksharabhyasa (Vidyarambha)
Aksharabhyasa — also called Vidyarambha in North India and Ezhuthiniruthu in Kerala — is the Vedic samskara in which a child writes their first letter, formally inaugurating a lifelong journey of learning. Traditionally performed between ages 3 and 5, the child writes "Om Namah Siddham" (South) or "Hari Shri" (Kerala / North) in a plate of rice while the guru / father guides their hand. Saraswati, Ganesha, and the Kuladevata are invoked to bless the child's intellect, memory, and academic success. In Bangalore, Aksharabhyasa is beloved in Kannada, Tamil, Telugu, Malayali, and North Indian families alike.
When to Perform
Most auspicious on Vijayadashami (Dussehra) — Saraswati's ideal day. Also on Basant Panchami (Saraswati Puja), Akshaya Tritiya, Vasanta Navaratri, and Vidya-Muhurtam days. Saraswati or Guru nakshatra on Thursday / Wednesday is preferred. Child should typically be 3–5 years old.

Regional Traditions
🌴 South Indian
South Indian tradition — child sits in father's / guru's lap facing east, writes "Om Namah Siddham" in rice with their index finger while the guru holds the hand. In Kerala the phrase is "Hari Shri Ganapataye Namah" written on the tongue with gold ring, then in rice. Saraswati Ashtottara and Ganapathi Puja precede.
🔱 North Indian
North Indian Vidyarambha — typically on Basant Panchami at Saraswati Puja. The child writes "Shri Ganeshaya Namah" or "Hari Om" in rice / yellow rice. Family guru or father holds the child's hand. Saraswati Vandana is recited.
