How a Muhurat Is Chosen
काल: सर्वस्य भूतस्य विधाता · “Time is the dispenser of all beings.”
Tithi
The lunar day. Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) is generally favored over Krishna Paksha. Certain tithis — Chaturthi, Ashtami, Navami — are avoided for new beginnings.
Nakshatra
The moon's position in one of 27 star constellations. The family's primary nakshatra must be in harmony with the muhurat's nakshatra.
Yoga & Karana
27 Yogas and 11 Karanas further refine the window. Inauspicious combinations like Vyatipata and Vaidhriti yoga are avoided.
Planetary Positions
Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu transits are especially important. Mercury and Venus must be favorable for weddings; Sun-Moon conjunction favors homams.
Rahu Kalam
Each day has a 90-minute Rahu Kalam where no auspicious activity should begin. Calculated from sunrise, it varies by weekday.
Ayana
Uttarayana (Jan 14 – Jul 16) is preferred for most samskaras. Dakshinayana (Jul 17 – Jan 13) is restricted for certain rituals.

Common Questions
About Muhurats & Panchang
What is a muhurat?
A muhurat is an auspicious window of time chosen according to the Hindu Panchang — the ancient lunar calendar that considers the tithi (lunar day), nakshatra (birth star), yoga, karana, and planetary alignments. Performing a ritual during a correct muhurat is believed to maximize its spiritual potency and material benefit.
How do I pick a muhurat for Griha Pravesha?
The ideal Griha Pravesha muhurat avoids: Chaturmasa (Ashada Shukla Ekadashi to Kartika Shukla Ekadashi), Shraddha Paksha (Pitru Paksha), and inauspicious nakshatras like Bharani, Krittika, Ashlesha, Magha, Moola, and Jyeshtha. The most auspicious months are Magha, Phalguna, Vaishakha, and Jyeshtha — with Uttarayana (Makar Sankranti to Karka Sankranti) preferred. Our pandits personalize based on your family's primary nakshatra.
Are muhurats different for South and North Indian families?
The underlying Panchang is the same, but the calculation method differs. North India uses the Purnimanta system (month ends on full moon) while South India follows Amanta (month ends on new moon). Our pandits at Gopuja use the correct regional system based on your family tradition.
Can you arrange a personalized muhurat based on my nakshatra?
Yes. Share your nakshatra or date of birth on WhatsApp (+91 6364375041) and we'll suggest 3–5 auspicious date windows for your puja, filtering out Rahu Kalam, Yamaganda, and Guligai periods. This consultation is free with any booking.
What are Rahu Kalam and why is it important?
Rahu Kalam is a 90-minute inauspicious period that occurs each day, varying by day of the week and sunrise time. Starting a puja during Rahu Kalam is traditionally avoided. In Bangalore, Monday Rahu Kalam is roughly 7:30–9:00 AM. Our pandits always plan muhurats around Rahu Kalam.
Which months of 2026 are best for weddings?
For Vivaha (wedding) in 2026, the most auspicious months are late January–February (Magha/Phalguna), April–May (Chaitra/Vaishakha), and November–December (Kartika/Margashirsha). Chaturmasa (mid-July to mid-November) generally avoids weddings. Specific dates depend on bride and groom's nakshatras.
