About Seemantha
Seemantha — also called Seemantonnayana and in popular Kannada / Tamil usage "Seemantham" — is one of the sixteen prenatal samskaras of Hindu tradition, performed in the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy. The ritual combines two Vedic samskaras: Pumsavana (for a healthy child) and Seemantonnayana (for the mother's bhayatmaka samrakshana — protection from fears). The husband parts the wife's hair with a darbha, sings specific Vedic mantras, and the family celebrates with bangles, garlands, and a joyful bathing ceremony. The cherished "godh bharai" of North India and "valaikappu" of Tamil tradition are variations of this same samskara.
When to Perform
Performed in the 7th or 8th month of the first pregnancy. Auspicious days include Thursday, Friday, Monday in Shukla Paksha under Rohini, Hasta, Pushya, Anuradha, or Revati nakshatra. Avoid Bhadra and eclipses. Some families perform at 5th or 6th month if circumstances require.
