About Varalakshmi Vrata Puja
Varalakshmi Vrata is one of the most important festivals for married women in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. "Vara" means boon, and "Lakshmi" is the goddess of prosperity — the vrata (vow) is observed on the Friday before Shravana Purnima to seek Lakshmi's blessings for the well-being of the family. The main ritual involves adorning a Kalash as Goddess Lakshmi, tying sacred thread (Doram), and performing elaborate 16-step Shodashopachara Puja. Distribution of coconut and tambala to Suvasinis (married women) is a key tradition.
When to Perform
The Friday immediately preceding Shravana Purnima (full moon) — typically in July or August. This is the most auspicious day for this vrata.
