The Namakarana is one of the 16 samskaras of Hinduism — the sacred rite of giving a name to a newborn child. For Bangalore parents, it's often the first traditional ritual performed for the baby, and an emotional family gathering.

When to Perform Namakarana

Classical tradition prescribes the 11th or 12th day after birth (Ekadasha or Dwadasha). Some families perform it on the 13th day, 16th day, or on the first auspicious day in the baby's first month. The choice depends on:

  • The baby's birth nakshatra
  • Family tradition (Smarta, Vaishnava, Shaiva, Madhva all have nuances)
  • Whether the baby was born in an auspicious or inauspicious phase (Mool nakshatra, Gandanta, etc.)

If the baby was born in a dosha nakshatra, a Shanti puja is performed before or alongside the Namakarana.

What Happens During Namakarana

  • Ganapathi Puja — invoking Ganesha
  • Punyahavachanam — purification
  • Nandi Shraddha — honoring ancestors
  • Jatakarma remainder (if not done earlier)
  • Baby is bathed and dressed in new clothes
  • The name is whispered into the baby's right ear by the father (traditionally) four times
  • Family blessings — relatives hold the baby and offer blessings
  • Prasad distribution

Choosing the Name

Traditionally, the baby's name is based on:

  • Birth nakshatra — each nakshatra has 4 associated syllables (pada). The name should start with one of these.
  • Family deity name — many families include the kuladevata's name
  • Grandparent's name — some traditions repeat a grandparent's name
  • Ishta devata — parents' chosen deity

Our pandits can suggest nakshatra-compatible name options if you share the baby's birth details.

Regional Variations

Tamil Brahmin (Iyer/Iyengar) families perform Namakarana with extensive Vedic shlokas. Kannada families often combine it with the first tonsure (Chudakarana) if timing allows. North Indian families emphasize the Satyanarayan Katha on the same day. Marathi and Gujarati families celebrate with community gatherings. All are authentic — just mention your tradition when booking.
