About Annaprashana

Annaprashana (also called Choroonu in Kerala or Annaprashan in Bengali tradition) is the sacred samskara marking a baby's first feeding of solid food. Typically performed between the 5th and 7th month for boys and 6th and 8th month for girls, this joyful ceremony is accompanied by Vedic rituals seeking divine blessings for the child's health, nourishment, intelligence, and prosperity.

When to perform it

For boys: 5th, 7th, or 9th month. For girls: 6th, 8th, or 10th month from birth. Always on an auspicious day confirmed by the Panchang.

The South Indian procedure

In South Indian tradition, the ceremony is called Choroonu (Kerala) or Anna Prachana. Rice pudding (Payasam) is the first food offered. The ritual includes Ganapathi Puja, Ayushya Homa, and the ceremonial feeding.

This is the form our pandits follow by default in Yadavagiri — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.
