About Ayush Homam
Ayush Homam is a Vedic fire ritual performed to seek blessings of long life, good health, and protection · primarily for children and on birthdays. "Ayush" means life force or longevity. This homam invokes Lord Vishnu, Lord Dhanvantari (the physician of the gods), and Ayur Devata to grant the individual divine protection and vitality. It is traditionally performed on a child's first birthday or whenever health blessings are sought.
When to perform it
On the first birthday (Janmotsavam), annually on birthdays, during illness or after recovery, at the naming ceremony (Namakarana), or when the family astrologer recommends a longevity ritual.
The South Indian procedure
South Indian Ayush Homam includes Ayushya Suktam, Mahamrityunjaya mantra japa, and Dhanvantari Puja. The child is seated near the fire and has tilak applied on the forehead.
