About Bhoomi Puja
Bhoomi Puja, also known as Bhumi Pujan or Shila Nyasa, is the Vedic ritual performed on a plot of land before any digging, foundation, or construction begins. It seeks permission and blessings from Bhoomi Devi (Mother Earth), pacifies the Vastu Purusha, and propitiates the Naga Devatas who reside beneath the soil. In Bangalore, where new homes, apartments, IT parks, and factories are constantly breaking ground, Bhoomi Puja is considered non-negotiable by both traditional South Indian and North Indian families.
When to perform it
Performed on a muhurtam selected before the first spade of earth is turned on the plot. Auspicious days include Akshaya Tritiya, Vasant Panchami, and any day falling under Rohini, Mrigashira, Hasta, Uttara, or Revati nakshatra. Avoid Bhadra, eclipses, and rahu kalam. Our pandit will calculate the ideal muhurtam based on the plot direction and owner's nakshatra.
The South Indian procedure
In South Indian tradition, Bhoomi Puja includes Ganapathi Puja, Punyahavachanam, Naga Prathistha in the north-east corner, Vastu Puja with bricks placed in all eight directions, and offering of milk, turmeric, and silver coins into the earth. A small pit is dug and the first kalash with navadhanya is buried.
This is the form our pandits follow by default in Dattagalli — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Bhoomi Puja — common questions
Can Bhoomi Puja be done for an apartment flat or only for land?
Bhoomi Puja is typically done for a plot before ground-breaking. For an apartment already built, Grihapravesha + Vastu Shanti serve the same purpose. If you own a plot where an apartment will be constructed, Bhoomi Puja should be done before the first dig.
Do I need to be present at the plot for the entire ritual?
Yes, the landowner and ideally the spouse must be present. The Sankalpa is taken in the owner's name and gotra. Close family and key contractors are also welcome.
What if my plot has old negative history or Naga Dosha?
Bhoomi Puja is precisely the remedy. The Naga Pratishtha and Vastu Purusha propitiation neutralise such doshas. For severe cases, we recommend combining it with a Sarpa Samskara Puja.
How much advance notice do you need?
Ideally 5–7 days so we can confirm muhurtam, arrange silver Naga idol, navadhanya pouches, and assign the right pandit for your tradition.
