About Ganapathi Homam
Ganapathi Homam is the most fundamental and auspicious fire ritual in Hindu worship · it is performed before beginning any major puja, event, or important life endeavor. Lord Ganesha, as the remover of obstacles (Vighnahara) and bestower of wisdom (Buddhi), is invoked through the sacred fire (Agni) to bless all undertakings. This homam is performed independently for specific blessings or as the opening ritual for larger ceremonies.
When to perform it
Before any major life event (wedding, business launch, new home entry), on Ganesh Chaturthi and every Chaturthi (4th lunar day), when starting a new course of study, career, or venture, or when facing persistent obstacles in life.
The South Indian procedure
The South Indian Ganapathi Homam uses 21 types of flowers and Modaka (sweet dumplings) as Naivedyam. The Ganesh Atharvashirsha and Ganapathi Upanishad are recited during the homa.
This is the form our pandits follow by default in Kuvempunagar — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Ganapathi Homam — common questions
Is Ganapathi Homam always performed before other pujas?
Yes, it is traditionally the first ritual in any major ceremony. When done independently, it is performed for specific blessings related to a new beginning.
What is the significance of Durva grass in this puja?
Durva grass (3-bladed) is Ganesha's most favorite offering. 21 blades of Durva offered with each of Ganesha's 21 names is highly auspicious.
Can children be present during the homam?
Absolutely. The sacred fire and chanting are auspicious for children. They can offer flowers and Durva grass under the pandit's guidance.
