About Krishna Janmashtami Puja
Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna · the 8th avatar of Vishnu · on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami at midnight. Krishna is the embodiment of joy, love, wisdom, and divine play (Leela). The midnight birth celebration (Nishita Puja) is the main ritual. Families decorate a small cradle for Krishna, offer the famous 56-item Chappan Bhog, and celebrate with bhajans and devotional singing until midnight.
When to perform it
Janmashtami is observed on the Ashtami of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of Bhadrapada month · typically in August. The main puja is at midnight (Nishita Kala) when Krishna was born.
The South Indian procedure
South Indian (Gokul Ashtami) tradition includes elaborate Mandara Puja, Uriyadi (butter pot breaking by children), Krishna's footprint drawn in kumkum from entrance to puja room (welcoming baby Krishna), and Seedai (rice snack) offering.
