About Maha Shivaratri Puja

Maha Shivaratri · "The Great Night of Shiva" · is the most sacred festival for Shaivites. It falls on the 14th night of Phalguna Krishna Paksha. Legend holds that on this night, Lord Shiva performed the Tandava (cosmic dance) and that Shiva and Parvati were married. The night is divided into four prahars (watches), each with an abhishekam. Fasting through the day and night vigil (Jaagaran) while chanting Shiva's names is the core practice.

When to perform it

The night before Amavasya (new moon) of Phalguna month · typically in February or March. The four-prahar puja is done at night (9 PM, 12 AM, 3 AM, 6 AM). Express puja can be done in the evening.

The South Indian procedure

South Indian Shivaratri features Rudrabhishekam with Bilva leaves, Lingashtakam and Shiva Panchakshara chanting, Vibhuti prasad, and pilgrimage to Shiva temples at night (Kedareshwara, Bull Temple, etc. in Bangalore).

This is the form our pandits follow by default in Kuvempunagar — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Why families book it

Maha Shivaratri Puja — common questions

Do I need to stay awake all night?

Traditional Shivaratri Jaagaran involves staying awake through the night. Our pandits can perform the four-prahar puja if you wish to observe it fully. For those who cannot, a condensed evening Shivaratri puja is equally sincere.

Why are Bilva (Bel) leaves offered to Shiva?

Bilva (Aegle marmelos) leaves are Shiva's most beloved offering. The three leaflets represent the three eyes of Shiva, the Trimurti (Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva), and the three Vedas. Offering 108 Bilva leaves on Shivaratri is considered equivalent to performing all rituals.
