About Ugadi Puja

Ugadi (also Yugadi in Kannada) marks the beginning of the Hindu lunar calendar year · celebrated as the New Year by Kannada and Telugu communities. The name comes from "Yuga" (era) + "Adi" (beginning). It falls on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. The most distinctive tradition of Ugadi is eating Bevu-Bella (neem + jaggery mixture) · symbolizing that life has a mix of bitter and sweet. Panchanga Shravanam (listening to the year's almanac) is performed by the family pandit.

When to perform it

Ugadi is observed on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada · typically in late March or April. The puja is performed in the morning after an oil bath.

The South Indian procedure

Karnataka Ugadi features Bevu-Bella, Panchanga Shravanam in Kannada, Obbattu/Holige (sweet puran poli), mango leaves and flowers torana at the entrance, new clothes, and home puja. The new Samvatsara name is announced.

This is the form our pandits follow by default in Siddhartha Layout — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Ugadi Puja — common questions

What is Panchanga Shravanam?

It is the tradition of listening to the Vedic almanac (Panchanga) for the new year. The pandit reads the Samvatsara name, planetary positions, key festivals, auspicious muhurtas, and predictions for the year · in Kannada or Telugu.

Is Ugadi the same as Gudi Padwa?

Yes, they are celebrated on the same day. Gudi Padwa is the Marathi New Year. Ugadi is the Kannada/Telugu New Year. Our pandits serve both traditions.
