About Upanayanam
Upanayanam (also called Munja, Yajnopavita, or Janeu Ceremony) is one of the most significant samskaras in Hindu tradition · the initiation of a boy into formal Vedic education and the Brahmacharya (student) stage of life. The boy receives the sacred thread (Yajnopavita or Janeu) and is initiated into the Gayatri Mantra by his father, symbolically entering the world of knowledge and spiritual discipline. It is a second birth · the boy is said to be "twice born" (Dvija).
When to perform it
Traditionally between ages 7–16. Auspicious months are Magha (January-February), Phalguna (March), and Vaishakha (May). The exact date is determined by the boy's nakshatra and the Panchang.
The South Indian procedure
South Indian Upanayanam (called Munja in Kannada, Poonal Kalyanam in Tamil) includes 2-day elaborate ceremony with Seemantha ceremony, symbolic Kashi Yatra, Brahmopadesa (Gayatri initiation), and Samidha Dana (collecting sacred wood). The boy wears dhoti for the first time.
This is the form our pandits follow by default in Dattagalli — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Upanayanam — common questions
Is Upanayanam only for Brahmin boys?
Traditionally, Upanayanam is prescribed for the three upper varnas (Brahmin, Kshatriya, Vaishya). Today, many families across castes and communities perform this ceremony for its spiritual and educational significance.
How many days does the Upanayanam take?
A traditional Upanayanam is a 2-day ceremony. A simplified version can be done in one day. We offer both options based on your family's preference.
What does the boy need to do after the ceremony?
The boy is taught the Sandhyavandanam (daily prayer ritual) which should ideally be performed twice daily · at sunrise and sunset. Our pandit teaches this to both the boy and the parents.
