What is Sankashti Chaturthi?
Sankashti (Sankashtahara) Chaturthi is the fourth day of the waning moon (Krishna Paksha Chaturthi) every lunar month, dedicated to Lord Ganesha. "Sankashta" means trouble and "hara" means remover: devotees pray to Ganesha, the Vighnaharta, to remove obstacles and difficulties.
How is the Sankashti vrat observed?
Devotees fast from sunrise and worship Ganesha in the evening with durva grass, red flowers and modaka. After the moon rises, they offer arghya (water) to the moon, have darshan, and break the fast. Fasting is a personal choice and not required to join the temple puja.
What should I offer Lord Ganesha on Sankashti Chaturthi?
Durva grass (traditionally 21 blades), red flowers such as hibiscus, modaka or laddu, coconut, banana and a ghee lamp. All samagri for the temple puja is arranged; you may bring flowers or fruits if you wish.
Why do Ganapati Homa on Sankashti Chaturthi?
Ganapati Homa is offered to Lord Ganesha through the sacred fire with the Ganapati mantra, modaka, durva and ghee. Performed on Sankashti, a day sacred to Ganesha, it is done to remove obstacles, before new beginnings and for peace and prosperity in the family.
Which mantra is chanted on Sankashti Chaturthi?
"Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" and "Vakratunda Mahakaya Suryakoti Samaprabha, Nirvighnam Kuru Me Deva Sarva Karyeshu Sarvada" are the most common. The Sankashtahara Ganapati Stotram from the Narada Purana is also recited.
Why do you ask for gotra, nakshatra and rashi?
The sankalpa states who is offering the puja and from where. Pandit ji recites it with your name, gotra, nakshatra, rashi and location so the puja is offered in your family's name. Choose "Don't know" if you are unsure.
