About Karthika Deepam Puja
Karthika Masam (month of Karthika) is the holiest month in Shaiva tradition. Every evening during this month, devotees light lamps for Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. The month concludes with the grand Karthika Purnima (also called Karthika Deepam) · a night of thousand lamps. A unique feature of Karthika is that both Shiva and Vishnu are worshipped equally, along with Tulasi (sacred basil) and the Amla (gooseberry) tree. In Bangalore, families light diyas in their puja room, courtyards, and doorways throughout the month.
When to perform it
Throughout Karthika month (Kartik month · October to November), especially on Mondays (Shiva), Ekadashi (Vishnu), and Karthika Purnima (full moon) for the grandest celebration.
The South Indian procedure
Karnataka: Karthika Somavar (Monday) is especially sacred · visiting Shiva temple and lighting deepa in the evening. Tulasi Vivah (on Utthana Ekadashi) marks Vishnu waking from Yoga Nidra. Amla tree puja is observed. Skanda Sashti falls within Karthika.
This is the form our pandits follow by default in Tilaknagar — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.
