About Rama Navami Puja
Rama Navami celebrates the birth of Lord Sri Rama · the 7th avatar of Vishnu · on Chaitra Shukla Navami (9th day of bright fortnight of Chaitra month). Rama embodies Dharma, virtue, and ideal kingship. The festival is especially celebrated in Karnataka with Panakam (jaggery-pepper drink) and Kosambari (lentil salad) as prasad · a uniquely South Indian tradition. Ramayana Parayana (reading) is a key ritual.
When to perform it
Rama Navami falls on Chaitra Shukla Navami · typically in late March or April. The auspicious time is noon (Madhyahna) when Lord Rama was born.
The South Indian procedure
Karnataka and South Indian tradition features Ramanavami procession, Panakam (jaggery-pepper-water), Kosambari (cucumber lentil salad), and Vadapappu (soaked Bengal gram) as prasad. Ram-Sita-Lakshmana cradle swinging (Jhoola Utsav) is popular.
