About Seemantha

Seemantha — also called Seemantonnayana and in popular Kannada / Tamil usage "Seemantham" — is one of the sixteen prenatal samskaras of Hindu tradition, performed in the 7th or 8th month of pregnancy. The ritual combines two Vedic samskaras: Pumsavana (for a healthy child) and Seemantonnayana (for the mother's bhayatmaka samrakshana — protection from fears). The husband parts the wife's hair with a darbha, sings specific Vedic mantras, and the family celebrates with bangles, garlands, and a joyful bathing ceremony. The cherished "godh bharai" of North India and "valaikappu" of Tamil tradition are variations of this same samskara.

When to perform it

Performed in the 7th or 8th month of the first pregnancy. Auspicious days include Thursday, Friday, Monday in Shukla Paksha under Rohini, Hasta, Pushya, Anuradha, or Revati nakshatra. Avoid Bhadra and eclipses. Some families perform at 5th or 6th month if circumstances require.

The South Indian procedure

South Indian Seemantham — mother is seated on a decorated asana, bathed with turmeric water, dressed in new silk saree, adorned with 9 types of flowers and bangles. Husband performs Udaka Shanti, Pumsavana mantra, and Seemantonnayana. Valaikappu (bangle-ceremony) follows with elder women blessing the mother.

This is the form our pandits follow by default in Metagalli — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Why families book it

  • Protects the mother from fears and negative energies during pregnancy
  • Invokes blessings for a healthy, intelligent child
  • Sanctifies the womb as the seat of a new soul
  • Fulfills two traditional samskaras (Pumsavana + Seemantonnayana)
  • Creates joyous family memory through bangles, garlands, song
  • Balances the mother's emotions in the final trimester

Seemantha — common questions

Is Seemantha done at in-laws or mother's house?

Traditionally at the mother's house (parental home), where the mother typically stays for delivery. Some families do it at in-laws' or current residence. Both are acceptable.

At what month should I plan it?

7th month is most common. 8th month is also fine. Avoid the 9th month as delivery can happen anytime. Our pandit helps pick a muhurtam within the 7th or 8th-month window.

Is this the same as Valaikappu / Godh Bharai?

Yes — Valaikappu (Tamil), Godh Bharai (Hindi), Seemantham (Kannada / Telugu / Malayalam) are cultural names for the Vedic Seemantonnayana samskara. Gopuja performs all variants.

Do I need to do it for the second pregnancy?

Traditionally Seemantha is prescribed once per mother (on the first pregnancy), since it is a samskara of the mother, not the child. However, many families lovingly repeat it for subsequent pregnancies — either choice is acceptable.

Planning your Seemantha in Metagalli

Metagalli sits in North Mysore, close to Metagalli Industrial Area, and we serve the whole belt around it — Hebbal, Belagola, Bannimantap, Vijayanagar included. Whether you are in an independent house, one of the newer apartment projects, or a family home that has been in the locality for generations, the seemantha is performed at your address with the samagri brought to you.

Mysore families usually want the Kannada tradition, and that is our default here — the sankalpa, the procedure and the explanation all in Kannada. If your family follows a different sampradaya, or you need the ritual explained in English for relatives joining from abroad, say so when you book and we will match a purohit accordingly.
