About Varalakshmi Vrata Puja

Varalakshmi Vrata is one of the most important festivals for married women in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. "Vara" means boon, and "Lakshmi" is the goddess of prosperity · the vrata (vow) is observed on the Friday before Shravana Purnima to seek Lakshmi's blessings for the well-being of the family. The main ritual involves adorning a Kalash as Goddess Lakshmi, tying sacred thread (Doram), and performing elaborate 16-step Shodashopachara Puja. Distribution of coconut and tambala to Suvasinis (married women) is a key tradition.

When to perform it

The Friday immediately preceding Shravana Purnima (full moon) · typically in July or August. This is the most auspicious day for this vrata.

The South Indian procedure

Karnataka and Andhra tradition: elaborate Varalakshmi face (Kannika) adorned on the kalash, 16-step puja with Ashtalakshmi archana, preparation of sundal (boiled legumes), coconut-tambala-banana distribution to Suvasinis, and tying of Varalakshmi Doram (sacred thread) on the wrist.

This is the form our pandits follow by default in Bannur Road — Mysore families are overwhelmingly Kannada-tradition. Tell us if your family follows a different sampradaya and we will match a purohit accordingly.

Varalakshmi Vrata Puja — common questions

Can unmarried girls also observe Varalakshmi Vrata?

Traditionally this vrata is for married women (Suvasinis) for their husband's well-being. Unmarried girls can observe it for a good marriage. Widows generally do not observe it, though practices vary by family.

What is the Varalakshmi Kannika?

Varalakshmi Kannika is the face (silver or illustrated) placed on top of the kalash to represent Goddess Varalakshmi. The kalash is dressed in a saree and adorned with jewellery · she is treated as a living goddess.

How many Suvasinis should be invited?

Traditionally 5, 9, or 11 married women are invited and honored with tambala (betel leaves, coconut, fruits) and the Varalakshmi thread. The pandit guides on the correct number per family tradition.
