About Durga Deepa Namaskara
Durga Deepa Namaskara is a beloved Karnataka tradition in which 108 or 1008 ghee / oil lamps are lit in rows before an image or idol of Goddess Durga, and the devotee offers full namaskaras (prostrations) as each lamp's prayer is recited. Immensely popular among South Indian families in Bangalore — especially during Navratri, Sankata Hara Chaturthi, and every Friday of Ashadha / Shravana — this ritual is believed to burn negative karma, destroy fears, and invite Durga's protective shakti into the home.
When to Perform
Most auspicious during Ashada, Shravana, and Navratri. Fridays in Shukla Paksha, Ashtami and Navami tithis, and Durga Ashtami are ideal. Can also be performed for specific intentions — health recovery, children's welfare, protection from enemies, overcoming fears — at any time.

Regional Traditions
🌴 South Indian
The core tradition is Kannada / Karnataka South Indian — 108 or 1008 cotton-wick ghee lamps are arranged in a mandala or rows before the Durga idol. The Durga Ashtottara, Lalita Sahasranama, or Devi Mahatmya is chanted while the devotee offers namaskaras equal to the lamp count.
🔱 North Indian
In North Indian homes, a similar ritual is practiced during Navratri as "Jyoti Jagaran" — akhand diya (unbroken lamp) burning for 9 days along with Durga Saptashati paath. Can be combined with Kanya Pujan on Ashtami / Navami.
