History of Sri Panchalingeshwara Temple
One of the oldest temples in Bangalore, with Ganga-period inscriptions. Five lingas in one complex.
Sri Panchalingeshwara Temple in Begur is among the oldest temples in the Bangalore region. A Ganga-period stone inscription found in Begur, dated to around 890 CE, contains the earliest known mention of the name "Bengaluru".
As the name says, the complex has five lingas: Nageshwara, Choleshwara, Karneshwara, Nakhareshwara and Kaleshwara, built and expanded over centuries by the Gangas, Cholas and later rulers. It remains a living temple for the villages that are now part of south-east Bangalore.
