About the temple
Chola-origin temple expanded by Kempegowda, with a tall Vijayanagara gopuram. Maha Shivaratri is the main festival.
Halasuru Someshwara Temple is one of the oldest temples in Bangalore. Its origins go back to the Chola period, and it was greatly expanded under Kempegowda and the Vijayanagara rulers. Legend says Kempegowda, resting here after a hunt, saw Lord Someshwara in a dream and was told to build the temple.
Its tall Vijayanagara gopuram, richly carved pillars and kalyana mantapa make it a heritage landmark. Maha Shivaratri and the annual car festival are the biggest days of the year.
Bring the blessings home
Devotees of Lord Shiva often follow a temple visit with a puja at home. A Gopuja pandit brings the full samagri kit and performs it with the same Vedic vidhi.
