About the temple
Cave temple carved into rock. On Makara Sankranti the evening sun passes between the horns of Nandi onto the Shivalinga.
Gavi Gangadhareshwara is a natural cave temple in Gavipuram, shaped into its present form in the 16th century under Kempegowda. Inside the cave are shrines to Shiva as Gangadhareshwara and a rare image of Agni, the fire god.
The temple is known across India for an alignment that happens on Makara Sankranti. On that evening the setting sun shines through a window, passes between the horns of the Nandi and falls on the Shivalinga inside the cave. Thousands gather each year to witness it. The courtyard also has two large monolithic granite discs representing the sun and the moon.
Bring the blessings home
Devotees of Lord Shiva often follow a temple visit with a puja at home. A Gopuja pandit brings the full samagri kit and performs it with the same Vedic vidhi.
