About the temple
Kempegowda-era temple with a giant monolithic Nandi. Hosts the Kadalekai Parishe groundnut fair every Karthika.
Built in 1537 under Kempegowda, the Dodda Basavanna Gudi houses one of the largest Nandi images in India, carved from a single granite rock. Basavanagudi, "the temple of the bull", takes its name from it.
Local legend tells of a bull that grazed on the groundnut fields around the hill. Farmers prayed to Nandi and vowed to offer their first harvest, and the bull was calmed. That vow lives on as Kadalekai Parishe, the groundnut fair held every Karthika month, when the streets around the temple fill with stalls of fresh groundnuts.
Bring the blessings home
Devotees of Nandi often follow a temple visit with a puja at home. A Gopuja pandit brings the full samagri kit and performs it with the same Vedic vidhi.
