About the temple
An 18-foot monolithic Ganapathi, famous for its butter (benne) alankara. Busy on Sankashti and Ganesh Chaturthi.
Dodda Ganapathi, literally "big Ganapathi", stands at the foot of Bugle Rock in Basavanagudi, a few steps from the Bull Temple. The temple is traditionally linked to Kempegowda, the 16th-century founder of Bengaluru, who built several shrines on this rocky ridge.
Tradition holds that the image is swayambhu, shaped from a single boulder rather than carved and installed. Over generations it became one of the most loved Ganapathi shrines in old Bangalore, and its butter alankara, where the entire idol is covered in fresh benne, draws long queues of devotees.
Bring the blessings home
Devotees of Lord Ganesha often follow a temple visit with a puja at home. A Gopuja pandit brings the full samagri kit and performs it with the same Vedic vidhi.
